Andhra Pradesh Fisheries University is a specialized state university devoted to fisheries education, research and extension in Andhra Pradesh. It was created under the Andhra Pradesh Fisheries University Act, 2020 to establish a dedicated institutional system for fisheries and aquatic-resource sciences within a dedicated sectoral university. The university’s headquarters and developing campus are associated with the Narasapuram area of West Godavari district. Its academic foundation includes the College of Fishery Science at Muthukur, an older fisheries institution that began under the state agricultural-university system and later passed through Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University before becoming part of the new fisheries university. This institutional continuity gives Andhra Pradesh Fisheries University an established teaching and research base despite the university itself being comparatively new. Its mandate covers education, research and extension relating to fisheries, aquaculture, aquatic animal health, fish processing, resource management and technologies relevant to the state’s extensive inland and coastal fisheries sector. Andhra Pradesh has a major aquaculture economy, so the university’s specialized role connects professional education with practical issues in production, health, sustainability, processing and value chains. The state government sanctioned major infrastructure for the developing Narasapuram campus, including academic and administrative buildings, and laid a foundation stone for the permanent facilities. New teaching capacity has also been planned through the College of Fishery Science at Narasapuram. The university’s field orientation is important because fisheries education depends on exposure to aquaculture systems, aquatic environments, laboratories and industry-linked production practices. Its creation separated fisheries higher education into a university specifically designed around the sector’s scientific and workforce needs. Andhra Pradesh Fisheries University therefore combines the heritage of the Muthukur fisheries college with a newer statewide university structure intended to expand fisheries education, research capability, extension services and skilled human resources for one of Andhra Pradesh’s economically significant primary sectors.
