Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyaapeeth,(former Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth) Ratnagiri Summary
Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth is Maharashtra’s agricultural university dedicated to the Konkan region, with headquarters at Dapoli in Ratnagiri district. Established in 1972 as Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, it was created to address the distinctive education, research and extension needs of a coastal farming region characterized by high rainfall, lateritic soils, rice cultivation, horticulture, fisheries and livestock. The university’s work follows the three-part agricultural-university mandate of teaching, research and extension. Its regional research programmes develop and test technologies for local crop and farming systems, while extension activities take those results to farmers through demonstrations, training and advisory services. The institution builds on earlier agricultural education and extension work at Dapoli and has developed research stations and field units across Konkan. The university was established in 1972 to serve agriculture and allied sectors in the Konkan region. Dapoli in Ratnagiri district serves as the headquarters. Fisheries research reflects the region’s extensive coastline and marine economy. Livestock and animal-production research form part of the allied agricultural mandate. Extension programmes demonstrate locally tested technologies to farmers. Research stations operate across different Konkan agro-ecological conditions.
