Somaiya Vidyavihar University is a self-financed state private university in Mumbai established in 2019, but its institutional roots extend to the educational work of Karamshi Jethabhai Somaiya. K. J. Somaiya’s first education initiative began with a rural school in 1942, followed by the establishment of the Somaiya Trust in 1953. Somaiya Vidyavihar was founded in 1959 as a broader educational campus, with construction beginning that year and teaching starting in June 1960. Over subsequent decades the Vidyavihar complex grew to include institutions in arts, science, commerce, engineering, management, medicine and other professional fields. This long development created the academic ecosystem from which Somaiya Vidyavihar University later emerged. The Maharashtra government approved the proposal for the private university in 2019, and the University Grants Commission records 26 August 2019 as its establishment date. The university now brings multiple disciplines into a flexible multidisciplinary framework while retaining the philanthropic educational tradition associated with the Somaiya family.
