Major Dhyan Chand Sports University Summary
Major Dhyan Chand Sports University is a state public sports university being developed in Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, as a specialized institution for sports education, athlete training, research, and professional development. The state initiated the university through the Uttar Pradesh State Sports University framework in 2021, and the foundation stone was laid at Salawa and Kaili villages in Sardhana on 2 January 2022. The institution is named after legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. The university has been conceived as the first dedicated sports university of Uttar Pradesh. Its model combines high-performance training with academic programmes in fields connected to sport, including coaching, sports science, management, physiotherapy, nutrition, technology, and related professional areas. This structure is intended to create pathways not only for competitive athletes but also for coaches, researchers, administrators, therapists, analysts, and sports-industry professionals. Plans for the campus include specialized infrastructure for hockey, football, basketball, volleyball, handball, kabaddi, tennis, athletics, swimming, cycling, shooting, squash, gymnastics, weightlifting, archery, canoeing, kayaking, and other disciplines. Government project descriptions have also emphasized capacity for both male and female sportspersons and the integration of modern training facilities with education and research. Meerut is an especially relevant location because the region has a strong sporting culture and a major sports-goods manufacturing industry. The university is therefore positioned to connect athlete development with sports science, technology, entrepreneurship, and industry collaboration. Its long-term objective is to build a complete sports ecosystem in which academic qualifications, practical coaching, talent identification, research, performance support, and infrastructure reinforce one another. As a young institution, its history is closely tied to the phased development of its campus and the expansion of specialized sports programmes. The project treats sport as both a performance field and a knowledge sector, linking competitive excellence with education, employment, research, health, technology, management, and industry.
