Bihar Sports University Summary
Bihar Sports University is a state public university at Rajgir in Nalanda district, created to develop specialized higher education, scientific training and professional capacity in sports and physical education. The university was set up through Bihar Act 21 of 2021 and was formally established on 24 February 2023. It shares a large integrated campus with the State Sports Academy, allowing academic study to be connected directly with high-performance training infrastructure. The Rajgir campus was inaugurated on 29 August 2024, National Sports Day. Its facilities include an athletics track, football ground, hockey turfs, an international cricket stadium and courts for basketball, volleyball, handball, lawn tennis and badminton, together with other indoor and outdoor training spaces. The university states that the combined university-academy campus supports training across twenty-four sports disciplines. In January 2025 the University Grants Commission recognized Bihar Sports University under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act. The university also became a member of the Association of Indian Universities. Academic activity moved into a more formal phase in 2025 with admission to the Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Coaching and the constitution of a Centre for Sports and Physical Education to administer teaching and training. Athletics and cricket were among the first coaching specializations. The university is developing a broader academic portfolio around physical education, sports coaching and sports management. Its model is deliberately interdisciplinary: classroom study is intended to work alongside sports science, coaching methodology, athlete development and practical training. Bihar Sports University is therefore designed not merely as a degree-granting institution but as a specialized state platform linking higher education with elite sports infrastructure and professional coaching. The co-location with the State Sports Academy is central to this model because students and coaches can use competition-grade facilities while studying the scientific, managerial and pedagogical dimensions of sport.
