North Lakhimpur University Summary
North Lakhimpur University is a public state university at Khelmati in Lakhimpur, Assam, created by upgrading the former North Lakhimpur College under Assam Act No. LVIII of 2023. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, and carries forward an institutional history that began in 1952 when North Lakhimpur College was founded to expand higher education in the region. That long college phase created the academic base from which the present university emerged. Before university status, the institution developed a substantial record of teaching, research and institutional capacity. It celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2002, received DBT and DST support in 2008 and 2009, gained UGC College with Potential for Excellence status in 2010 and again in a second phase in 2014, and established a DBT-supported Biotech Hub in 2011. UGC granted autonomous status in 2013, allowing greater control over curriculum and academic administration, and the institution later expanded postgraduate and research programmes. Its development also included a digital library, research facilities, innovation initiatives, a synthetic athletic track and a Skill Hub recognised by the National Skill Development Corporation in 2022. With elevation to university status in 2023, the institution entered a new phase focused on advanced teaching, interdisciplinary research, innovation, skills and community engagement. The university serves Lakhimpur and the wider north-bank region of Assam, combining its established strengths in undergraduate education with expanded postgraduate and research responsibilities. Its evolution is unusual because the university inherits more than seven decades of institutional experience rather than beginning as a newly created campus. The combination of legacy departments, autonomy-era academic reforms, externally supported science infrastructure and new statutory university status gives North Lakhimpur University a distinctive bridge between a historic regional college and a modern public university.
