MAHAPURUSHA SRIMANTA SANKARADEVA VISWAVIDYALAYA Summary
Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya is a private university in Nagaon, Assam, established to honor the intellectual, cultural and social legacy of the fifteenth-century saint-scholar Srimanta Sankaradeva. The institution was created through the Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya Act, 2013 after the sponsoring Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha proposed a university under Assam's private-university framework. The university was formally founded on 10 June 2014. MSSV's academic identity is shaped by both contemporary higher education and the cultural heritage associated with Sankaradeva. Programmes and research extend across humanities, social sciences, language, culture, performing traditions and newer multidisciplinary fields. The university also develops postgraduate, research, professional and certificate-level study, with academic systems that include examinations, research admission and digital student services. Its location in Nagaon is particularly significant because the district is closely connected with Sankaradeva's life and cultural work. The university's legal foundation was created when the Assam Legislative Assembly passed the 2013 Act, which received gubernatorial assent and was notified in August 2013. Formal founding followed in June 2014. Since then, MSSV has developed as a 'people's university' in the language used by its own institutional history, seeking to combine scholarship, social regeneration and the study of Assam's cultural traditions with modern academic disciplines. Its development includes postgraduate and doctoral activity, statutory ordinances and research systems operating from Nagaon. The university's location in Nagaon connects its academic identity directly with the region associated with Srimanta Sankaradeva. Its institutional mission combines cultural scholarship with broader multidisciplinary and research-oriented higher education. Pre-2013 — Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha developed the proposal for a university inspired by Sankaradeva's cultural and social legacy. 14 August 2013 — The university Act was notified in the Assam Gazette after receiving the Governor's assent. Current phase — MSSV continues teaching and research from Nagaon while maintaining its distinctive Sankaradeva-centered cultural identity.
