Girijananda Chowdhury University is a state private university in Assam established in 2022 under an Act of the Assam Government. It operates under the aegis of Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society and has its main campus at Azara on the outskirts of Guwahati, with a constituent presence in Tezpur. The university emerged from a long sequence of educational initiatives rather than starting from a blank institutional base. The sponsoring society was formed in 1992. It later established Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology in Guwahati in 2006 and Girijananda Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2007. Additional engineering and pharmacy initiatives followed at Tezpur, including public-private-partnership models. These institutions created the professional-education base that ultimately evolved into Girijananda Chowdhury University. The university today covers engineering and technology, pharmacy, management, sciences, humanities and social sciences, health-related fields and other multidisciplinary areas.
