Assam Don Bosco University is a private university in Guwahati, Assam, established by the Salesians of Don Bosco. Its development is unusually well documented. Focused planning began in February 2006, the Don Bosco Society’s Rector Major and General Council approved the project in January 2007, and the Government of Assam issued a Letter of Intent on March 29, 2008. The university considers that date its Foundation Day. The first academic venture, Don Bosco College of Engineering and Technology, opened at Azara in August 2008 with engineering students before the university’s formal inauguration in December. The institution was formally inaugurated on December 6, 2008 after the Assam Don Bosco University Ordinance was issued on December 3. The ordinance was replaced by the Assam Don Bosco University Act, 2009, and the Act was published in the Assam Gazette in February 2009. The university later received UGC recognition and developed into a multidisciplinary institution. Today its academic environment extends beyond engineering to technology, computing, commerce, management, social sciences and other areas, with undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral study. The university’s Don Bosco identity shapes its emphasis on education, values, service and the formation of professionals and leaders.
