Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila University, Khanpur Kalan, Sonipat Summary
Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila University is a state women’s university at Khanpur Kalan in Sonipat district, Haryana, with roots in a much older movement for women’s education in rural north India. Its institutional story begins with Bhagat Phool Singh, a social reformer who promoted education in the area and established a girls’ gurukul at Khanpur Kalan in 1936 with only three students. After his death, his daughter Subhashini Devi continued the educational mission and expanded the campus through a series of institutions for girls and women. A memorial girls’ college was established in 1967, followed by a College of Education in 1968, an Ayurvedic college in 1973, a women’s polytechnic in 1984 and further professional institutions. This network became the foundation for a full university. In 2006, the Haryana government upgraded the educational complex to Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, creating the first state women’s university in North India. The university now combines the legacy of the original gurukul with multidisciplinary higher education across humanities, social sciences, science, commerce, management, engineering, law, education, pharmacy, health sciences and other professional fields. Its residential setting is notable because it brings university-level study to a rural location rather than a major metropolitan centre. The institution’s women-focused mission is supported by teaching departments, constituent institutions, hostels and professional colleges that provide pathways from undergraduate study through postgraduate and doctoral education. The university’s history also reflects continuity between social reform and modern professional education: the early objective of expanding educational access for girls evolved into a public university with advanced academic programmes. For students, BPSMV offers a distinctive combination of women-only higher education, rural-campus life, professional and traditional disciplines, and an institutional heritage extending back to the pre-independence period. Its development demonstrates how a small community-based girls’ school grew over decades into a comprehensive state university.
