SWARNIM GUJARAT SPORTS UNIVERSITY Summary
Swarnim Gujarat Sports University is a specialized public state university created by Gujarat to develop higher education, research and professional training in sports, physical education and allied sciences. The university was established under Gujarat Act No. 22 of 2011, which received the Governor's assent on 6 June 2011 and was published in the Gujarat Government Gazette on 7 June. The Act created a teaching and affiliating university with statewide scope, allowing the institution to support both university-level academic programs and affiliated colleges or institutes connected with sports education. Its statutory functions extend beyond physical-education teaching to sports sciences, sports technology, high-performance training, management, research, coaching and the scientific preparation of athletes. The university is empowered to establish specialized centres, conduct research, develop innovative training methods and technologies, collaborate with institutions in India and abroad and maintain sports infrastructure needed for advanced instruction and performance development. This mandate reflects Gujarat's wider effort to professionalize the sports ecosystem by producing coaches, trainers, sports scientists, managers, researchers and support professionals rather than treating sport only as an extracurricular activity. The university's academic model therefore links classroom study with practical training, exercise and performance science, technology, coaching and applied research. As an affiliating university, it also has a system-level role in setting academic standards for sports and physical-education institutions within Gujarat. Its distinctiveness lies in treating sport as a multidisciplinary field of higher education with scientific, managerial, technological and professional dimensions. The university’s founding law also authorizes scholarships, research partnerships and specialized study centres designed to support both education and high-performance sport. Its statewide remit gives it a role in linking grassroots participation and professional sports development with formal academic qualifications. It was created under Gujarat Act No. 22 of 2011. The Act was published in the Gujarat Government Gazette on 7 June 2011.
