RAMA DEVI WOMEN'S UNIVERSITY, BHUBANESWAR Summary
Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar is Odisha’s first women’s university and the institutional successor to one of the state’s most prominent women’s colleges. Its roots lie in Government Women’s College, Bhubaneswar, which was later renamed Rama Devi Women’s College in 1969 in honor of freedom fighter and social reformer Rama Devi Choudhury. The college developed a strong academic identity over subsequent decades, gaining autonomous status in 1999, NAAC accreditation and UGC recognition as a College with Potential for Excellence. Under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan framework, the institution was upgraded to university status on 30 May 2015. The new university began as an affiliating women’s university and initially brought 48 women’s colleges formerly under Utkal University into its jurisdiction. The university was formally inaugurated on 3 December 2015, the birthday of Rama Devi, which is observed as Foundation Day. Located at Vidya Vihar in Bhubaneswar, the institution offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research opportunities across humanities, social sciences, sciences, commerce and interdisciplinary fields. Its academic mission combines subject knowledge with women’s empowerment, research, employability, leadership and social responsibility. The university’s distinctive role lies in providing a public higher-education space designed specifically around the academic advancement of women in Odisha. The institution’s earlier college phase received an A grade from NAAC in 2004 and again in the 2015 reaccreditation cycle. Its transition from autonomous college to affiliating university expanded responsibility from a single institution to a statewide network of women’s colleges. The Bhubaneswar campus preserves the continuity of the former Rama Devi Women’s College while supporting a broader university mandate. The institution continues to develop this role through public higher education, academic administration and student services. Its regional responsibilities remain closely connected with access, quality assurance, research and long-term institutional development. These functions together shape the university’s contemporary academic identity and public-service mission.
