Silicon University Summary
Silicon University is a state private university in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, upgraded to university status on 31 January 2024 from Silicon Institute of Technology. Its institutional history is considerably older than the university title: the engineering institute was founded in 2001 after the promoters’ earlier work in information technology education and training. Silicon’s main academic campus, known as SiliconTech, is located in Infocity, Bhubaneswar and extends across about 18.5 acres. The institution’s core strengths are in science, engineering and technology, with programs in computer science, electronics, electrical engineering, data science, VLSI, embedded systems, industrial internet applications, computer applications and emerging interdisciplinary areas. Research, innovation and entrepreneurship are central to the university’s stated mission. Silicon Institute of Technology received autonomous status from the UGC for ten years beginning in the 2018–19 academic year before the transition to university status. The university’s history also includes a long record of laboratory development, industry recruitment, library expansion and academic autonomy. The origins of the institution can be traced to the founders’ technology entrepreneurship in Odisha during the late 1980s and the creation of a charitable education trust in the 1990s. Silicon’s first engineering batch entered in 2001 through four AICTE-approved B.Tech programs, establishing the technical foundation that later expanded into a university. Its Bhubaneswar location places the campus in one of eastern India’s major technology and higher-education hubs. The university combines a relatively compact campus with a strong concentration on laboratory-based and computing-intensive disciplines. For prospective students, Silicon University is notable for the continuity between its two-decade engineering-institute history and its newer statutory status as a university. Silicon’s institutional culture also reflects a long emphasis on academic discipline, industry recruitment and technical problem solving. The university now has scope to extend that established engineering base into broader interdisciplinary research and postgraduate education.
