AIPH UNIVERSITY Summary
AIPH University is a private unitary university in Khordha district, Odisha, with a specialized institutional foundation in public health. Its origins lie in the Asian Institute of Public Health, established in 2008 after collaborative health research involving Indian and United States researchers highlighted the need for a dedicated public-health institution in the region. The institute launched its Master of Public Health program in 2010 and gradually expanded research, training and academic activity around population health. The Government of Odisha later created AIPH University through the AIPH University, Odisha, Act, 2017. The institution began functioning as a unitary university from the 2018–19 academic session. In 2019, the foundation stone for its own campus was laid on land at Haridamada in Khordha, an education corridor that also includes major national institutions in the Bhubaneswar region. AIPH University’s academic identity remains strongly research driven. Its work spans public health, epidemiology, infectious diseases, environmental health, chronic disease, water and sanitation, microbiome research, health systems and region-specific health challenges. Research has involved support or collaboration from Indian and international agencies, reflecting the university’s origin in global public-health partnerships. The institution also offers academic programs beyond its original MPH pathway as it develops into a broader health and life-sciences university. The university combines teaching with field research, public-health service and community engagement. This practical orientation is important because population-health education depends on data, surveillance, fieldwork, policy understanding and community-based interventions rather than classroom instruction alone. AIPH’s development from a specialist institute into a degree-granting university distinguishes it from conventional multidisciplinary private universities. Its history is therefore closely tied to public-health research needs in Odisha and eastern India. The university continues to build academic and research capacity while preserving the applied health focus that shaped the Asian Institute of Public Health from its foundation in 2008.
