BENGALURU NORTH UNIVERSITY Summary
Bengaluru North University is a state public university headquartered in the Kolar region of Karnataka and created through the reorganization of Bangalore University. The institution was established for the 2017–18 period as one of the new universities intended to reduce the size of Bangalore University’s metropolitan affiliation system and bring academic administration closer to colleges in eastern Bengaluru and adjoining districts. Government records identify its administrative office at Tamaka in Kolar, while postgraduate teaching developed at the university’s centre at Mangasandra on the outskirts of the city. The University Grants Commission listed Bengaluru North University as established on 29 June 2017 and recognized it on 4 October 2017. Its jurisdiction has included colleges from designated areas of Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts, giving the university a mixed metropolitan and regional character. The institution therefore functions primarily as a teaching and affiliating university: it coordinates undergraduate academic and examination systems for affiliated colleges while running postgraduate departments directly. The P.G. Centre at Mangasandra was established in 2018 and developed a multidisciplinary structure that grew to thirteen postgraduate departments. Subjects represented in the university’s wider academic system include humanities, social sciences, science, commerce, management and education. The creation of BNU reflects Karnataka’s policy response to the rapid growth of colleges around Bengaluru, where a single university had become administratively very large. Separating the northern and eastern jurisdiction was intended to improve affiliation, examinations and academic oversight. The university has also planned a permanent campus at Amaravathi while continuing functions from Tamaka and Mangasandra. For students, Bengaluru North University links the opportunities of the Bengaluru metropolitan region with the public-university system of Kolar and Chikkaballapur. Its identity is consequently shaped by affiliation, postgraduate teaching, regional access and the ongoing development of a newer university campus and institutional structure.
