Barkatullah University, Bhopal Summary
Barkatullah University is a public state university in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, established in 1970 under the original name Bhopal University. It was renamed Barkatullah Vishwavidyalaya in 1988 to commemorate Professor Barkatullah, the Bhopal-born freedom fighter and revolutionary associated with India’s independence movement. The university’s main campus occupies approximately 400 acres along Hoshangabad Road and contains academic, administrative, residential and student-support facilities. Over decades, Barkatullah University has developed a broad teaching and affiliating structure covering arts, social sciences, science, life sciences, engineering, law, commerce, education, physical education, technology, home science and management. University Teaching Departments provide postgraduate, professional and research education, while affiliated colleges extend undergraduate and postgraduate access across a large part of central Madhya Pradesh. Campus academic facilities include specialized buildings for life sciences, microbiology, law, applied aquaculture, humanities, social sciences, physics, applied geology, management, pharmacy and technology, as well as a central library and distance-education infrastructure. The university has also used open and distance learning to serve students who cannot attend regular campus programmes. National quality assessment has formed part of its institutional development: the university received a B grade in a 2015 NAAC cycle and later achieved an A grade in 2025. Its location in the state capital places it near major government, research and professional institutions, supporting academic collaboration and public engagement. The university’s long history reflects the expansion of higher education in Bhopal from a relatively compact post-independence university system to a large multidisciplinary network. For students, Barkatullah University combines the scale and course diversity of an affiliating state university with campus-based postgraduate departments, professional institutes and research opportunities. Its identity remains closely linked to Bhopal while its academic jurisdiction and affiliated-college responsibilities extend its influence well beyond the main campus. Its Bhopal location also strengthens access to state-level academic, cultural and research institutions.
