Bundelkhand University, Jhansi Summary
Bundelkhand University is a state public university in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, established in August 1975 under the provisions of the U.P. Universities Act. It was created initially as an affiliating institution serving the Bundelkhand region, but its academic character expanded significantly during the following decades. In 1986 the university received residential status with approval for four teaching departments: Business Administration, Rural Economics and Cooperation, Mathematics and Statistics, and Library and Information Science. A further academic expansion in 1996 added Tourism and Hotel Management, Geology and Food Technology. During the 1999–2000 academic session, additional departments were established under the self-finance framework, turning the university into a much broader teaching and professional-education centre. The University Grants Commission recognized Bundelkhand University under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) in 2001. The campus is spread across a large site in Jhansi near the Kamason hillocks and accommodates teaching institutes, a central library, student facilities and residential infrastructure. The university now combines direct campus teaching with a substantial affiliated-college system across the Bundelkhand region. Its academic portfolio spans Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Engineering, Pharmacy, Law, Education, Tourism, Food Technology and doctoral research. Professional and applied education has been an important part of its development since the move from an exclusively affiliating university toward a residential teaching university. Bundelkhand University has also taken responsibility for major state-level academic processes, including coordination of the Uttar Pradesh B.Ed Joint Entrance Examination in designated years. The institution’s evolution is therefore marked by three connected roles: regional affiliating university, multidisciplinary residential campus and professional education centre. Its growth from four approved residential departments in 1986 to a large faculty and institute structure reflects the expansion of higher education in Bundelkhand itself. Its Jhansi location directly serves the historically distinct Bundelkhand region of southern Uttar Pradesh around Jhansi.
