NRUPATHUNGA UNIVERSITY Summary
Nrupathunga University is a state university in central Bengaluru that grew out of the historic Government Science College on Nrupathunga Road. The institution traces its origin to 1 April 1921, when it was founded as an intermediate college during the reign of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV of Mysore. Over the following decades it developed into a full undergraduate science college, later added postgraduate and research activity, and became an important government higher-education institution in Bengaluru. Its transition to university status took place in 2020, the institution’s centenary period, when the former Government Science College was elevated as Nrupathunga University under Karnataka’s state-university framework. The new status allowed the institution to reorganise academic activity through Schools and to build a broader combination of undergraduate, postgraduate, research and teacher-education programmes while preserving its long science-education legacy. The university remains closely identified with science and interdisciplinary learning, and its location near the administrative heart of Bengaluru gives students access to a dense ecosystem of research laboratories, universities, technology companies, public institutions and cultural organisations. The institution had already experienced autonomous-college status before university conversion, providing experience in curriculum development and academic administration. Teacher education has become an additional element of the new university phase: the National Council for Teacher Education granted recognition for a four-year B.Sc. B.Ed. Integrated Teacher Education Programme from the 2023-24 academic session. Its identity is rooted in a century-old government science college, but its current mandate extends beyond the earlier affiliating-college model toward university-level teaching, research, innovation and interdisciplinary education. The combination of historic science departments, postgraduate work, research programmes and newer integrated offerings positions it as a distinctive public university within Bengaluru’s unusually large higher-education and research landscape. The transformation also preserves the identity of a historic government science institution while widening its university-level responsibilities.
