Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli Summary
Bharathidasan University is a state public university headquartered in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. It began functioning on 4 February 1982 under the Bharathidasan University Act, 1981 and was named after the revolutionary Tamil poet Bharathidasan. The university’s motto, translated as “We will create a brave new world,” is drawn from his writing and reflects the institution’s stated emphasis on academic innovation and social change. The university’s main Palkalaiperur campus is located on the Tiruchirappalli–Pudukkottai highway and today occupies more than 432 acres. A second city campus at Khajamalai covers about 40 acres and houses departments and centres including economics, educational technology, social work, women’s studies, computer science and engineering, lifelong learning, remote sensing and entrepreneurship-related activity. The university also has a distinctive industry-linked management presence through Bharathidasan Institute of Management, established in 1984 in collaboration with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited at Tiruverumbur. Bharathidasan University organizes teaching and research through faculties, schools, departments, centres and affiliated institutions. Its academic reach includes sciences, earth sciences, environmental sciences, social sciences, humanities, languages, computing, management and interdisciplinary fields. The Centre for Distance Education was established in 1992 to extend higher education to learners unable to attend regular programmes and later developed into the Centre for Distance and Online Education. Several specialist units illustrate the university’s research orientation. The Centre for Remote Sensing was established in 1994 and later became a full department under the School of Earth Sciences. The main campus supports a central library, research centres, hostels, sports facilities, health services and student amenities. Bharathidasan University therefore combines regional affiliation responsibilities with postgraduate teaching, doctoral research, distance education and specialized research infrastructure. Its schools, centres, affiliated colleges and constituent institutions extend its reach beyond the two Tiruchirappalli campuses. The coexistence of regular, distance and industry-linked education has been a defining feature of its development.
