BENGALURU DR.B.R.AMBEDKAR SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS UNIVERSITY Summary
Bengaluru Dr. B. R. Ambedkar School of Economics University is a specialized public university created by the Government of Karnataka to focus on economics and allied social-science disciplines. Its development began with a state-appointed committee chaired by S. V. Ranganath, then Vice-Chairman of the Karnataka State Higher Education Council and a former Chief Secretary. Acting on the committee’s recommendations, the government approved a dedicated School of Economics with an investment of ₹350 crore and allotted 43.45 acres within the Jnana Bharathi campus area in Bengaluru. The foundation stone was laid by President Pranab Mukherjee on 14 April 2017, marking the 125th birth anniversary year of B. R. Ambedkar. The first B.Sc. (Honours) Economics cohort was selected through an all-India entrance test conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority in June and July 2017, and classes began on 28 August. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh formally inaugurated the academic session on 4 October 2017. The institution initially operated under a society framework before becoming a unitary university through a Karnataka government notification dated 30 October 2019. Its academic design is intentionally concentrated: economics is integrated with mathematics, statistics, data analysis, public policy, finance and related quantitative or social-science perspectives. This specialization distinguishes it from large affiliating universities and allows programmes to be structured around analytical and policy-oriented training. The university campus has been developed as a dedicated academic environment for undergraduate, postgraduate and research-level work in economics and allied areas. On 20 June 2022, the new campus was inaugurated and a statue of B. R. Ambedkar was unveiled by the Prime Minister. For students, the institution offers a focused economics education model that combines quantitative training, policy analysis and social-science understanding within a university named for an economist, jurist and constitutional thinker whose work placed education and economic justice at the centre of public life.
