Dhamma Dipa International Buddhist University Summary
Dhamma Dipa International Buddhist University is a private university in the Sabroom subdivision of South Tripura. The university was established through the Dhamma Dipa International Buddhist University Act, 2022, enacted as Tripura Act No. 13 of 2022 after receiving the Governor’s assent in November 2022. It is sponsored by the Bahujana Hitaya Education Trust, a public charitable organization registered in Tripura on 18 June 2001. DDIBU was conceived as a university with Buddhist ethics at its core while also offering contemporary multidisciplinary higher education. Its statutory objectives extend beyond Buddhist and Indic studies to humanities, social sciences, commerce, natural and physical sciences, management, law, rural development, medical sciences, engineering and technology. The university’s Sabroom location is significant because South Tripura lies close to historic Buddhist sites and to India’s northeastern gateway toward Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. This gives the institution a distinctive cultural and geographic context for Buddhist studies, intercultural dialogue and regional academic engagement. DDIBU emphasizes values such as compassion, non-violence, ethical conduct and social responsibility while positioning meditation and mind training as complementary to academic learning. Its developing programme portfolio includes professional areas such as nursing, business administration, law, pharmacy and paramedical studies alongside its broader humanities and Buddhist mission. University governance is structured through statutory bodies including the Court, Executive Council and Academic Council under the Act and first statutes. As a young university, much of its institutional history concerns the transition from charitable trust activity to a legislatively established higher-education institution. DDIBU’s identity is therefore shaped by three connected elements: the Bahujana Hitaya Education Trust’s social mission, Tripura’s Buddhist and northeastern cultural setting, and a multidisciplinary university framework designed to combine ethical education with modern professional and research opportunities. Its development is intended to serve learners in Tripura and others pursuing Buddhist scholarship, professional education, peace studies and grounded higher learning.
