MAHARAJA BIR BIKRAM UNIVERSITY, AGARTALA Summary
Maharaja Bir Bikram University is a state public university in Agartala, Tripura, established on 1 November 2015 under the Maharaja Bir Bikram University Act, 2015. The university is named after Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, the last ruling monarch of Tripura and a major figure in the state’s modern educational development. Its location at College Tilla connects it directly with the earlier Vidyapattan educational vision developed during Maharaja Bir Bikram’s reign. That vision led to the establishment of Maharaja Bir Bikram College in 1947 and helped create an educational precinct that later became the setting for the university. MBB University began its academic journey in 2016 with departments including Public Administration, Applied Mathematics, English and Library and Information Science. It subsequently expanded its program portfolio, renamed some departments as their academic scope evolved, and introduced additional postgraduate and integrated programs. The university also maintains affiliation relationships with colleges in its immediate educational cluster. Its academic development includes humanities, social sciences, mathematics, library science and interdisciplinary study, with growing attention to research and doctoral work. The university received recognition under Section 12(B) of the UGC Act in 2020, strengthening its eligibility within the national higher-education framework. It has also adopted National Education Policy reforms in its undergraduate academic system. The campus is relatively compact but sits within a historically important educational landscape in the state capital, surrounded by institutions with roots in the Vidyapattan project. MBB University’s identity combines Tripura’s princely-era educational legacy with the needs of a modern state university. Its ongoing priorities include expanding academic departments, research, digital resources, infrastructure and collaborative programs while increasing postgraduate opportunities for students who previously depended heavily on limited university-level options within the state. Recognition under Section 12(B) of the UGC Act in 2020 further strengthened its eligibility for university-level development and research support.
