MAHARANI CLUSTER UNIVERSITY Summary
Maharani Cluster University is a state public university in Bengaluru, Karnataka, established as a unitary cluster university by amendments to the Karnataka State Universities Act in 2019. Its formation followed the cluster-university model promoted through the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan, which sought to combine the resources of established colleges and create stronger multidisciplinary institutions. Maharani Cluster University was constituted by bringing together three prominent women’s colleges in central Bengaluru: Maharani’s Science College for Women, Maharani’s Women Arts, Commerce and Management College, and Smt. V.H.D. Central Institute of Home Science. Maharani’s Science College for Women serves as the lead institution around which the cluster structure was developed. The university therefore has a distinctive foundation: instead of beginning as a new greenfield campus, it integrates the academic traditions, faculty, laboratories, libraries and student communities of longstanding colleges. Its teaching spans arts, languages, social sciences, commerce, management, science, computer applications, psychology and home science. Postgraduate programs include disciplines such as Kannada, English, economics, political science, history, sociology, commerce, management, physics, mathematics, microbiology, biochemistry, psychology, counselling psychology and areas of home science. The unitary structure means the constituent institutions operate within one university framework rather than as a conventional large affiliating system. Located on and around Palace Road in Bengaluru, the university benefits from a central urban academic setting and access to the city’s research, cultural and employment ecosystem. Its creation also strengthened a longstanding tradition of women’s higher education associated with the Maharani institutions. The university’s development has included common academic governance, postgraduate expansion, implementation of contemporary curriculum frameworks and integration of administrative systems across the cluster. Maharani Cluster University thus combines historic women’s colleges with a newer university structure designed to support multidisciplinary teaching, research and resource sharing. The cluster model supports shared facilities, interdisciplinary learning and coordinated development across its three constituent institutions.
