UNIVERSITY OF VISVESVARAYA COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING Summary
The University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) is a historic public engineering institution in Bengaluru whose origins date to 1917. It was established through the vision of Sir M. Visvesvaraya to create an engineering college for the then Mysore State and began with Civil and Mechanical Engineering. The institution is regarded as the first engineering college established in Karnataka and among the earliest engineering colleges in India. For much of its history it functioned within the University of Mysore and later Bangalore University before receiving a new autonomous university framework in 2022. UVCE combines a century-old engineering tradition with a central Bengaluru location. Its main city campus is at K. R. Circle near major civic landmarks, while additional engineering facilities are associated with the Jnana Bharathi area. Over time the institution expanded beyond Civil and Mechanical Engineering into Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science, Information Science and other technology fields. Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is complemented by doctoral research, laboratories, student technical organizations and industry-facing placement activity. A major institutional transition occurred when UVCE ceased operating simply as a constituent college of Bangalore University and became a state autonomous public university modelled on institutions of national importance. This change was designed to give it greater control over academic planning, governance, recruitment, research strategy and institutional development while preserving the historic UVCE identity. Its location in Bengaluru places students close to a major technology and innovation ecosystem, but the institution's character is also strongly shaped by its public-service origins and long alumni tradition. UVCE therefore stands at the intersection of Karnataka's early engineering education, the legacy of Sir M. Visvesvaraya and contemporary efforts to modernize a public technical university with more than a century of institutional history. Its public-university transition is intended to pair this historic reputation with faster academic decision-making and stronger research autonomy.
