BENGALURU CITY UNIVERSITY Summary
Bengaluru City University is a public state university centered on the historic Central College campus in Bengaluru. It emerged from the reorganization of Bangalore University, a process intended to create smaller university jurisdictions and improve academic administration across the rapidly expanding metropolitan region. Bengaluru Central University came into existence under the Karnataka State Universities amendment notified on 13 August 2015, while operational activity began after the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor on 26 July 2017. The Karnataka government approved commencement from 1 July 2017, and affiliated colleges and postgraduate departments were transferred into the new university structure later that year. Academic teaching for the first undergraduate and postgraduate batches began in 2018–19. The university inherited important academic assets from the Central College campus, including postgraduate departments in areas such as mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry, commerce, management, mass communication, apparel technology and global languages. Its campus carries a much older educational legacy because Central College predates the creation of the modern university and has educated prominent scientists, administrators and public figures. In June 2020, the institution was renamed Bengaluru City University to reflect its urban jurisdiction and avoid confusion with similarly named central institutions. The university functions as both a teaching and affiliating body, serving colleges within designated Bengaluru city constituencies while conducting postgraduate education at its central campus. It received recognition under Section 2(f) of the University Grants Commission Act in October 2017. Its academic profile combines humanities, languages, science, commerce, management, media and other urban higher-education fields. The institution’s defining characteristic is the meeting of two histories: the heritage of Central College and the creation of a newer state university designed for contemporary Bengaluru. For students, this provides access to a city-centered public university whose campus, affiliated network and academic departments are embedded directly within Karnataka’s largest metropolitan educational environment.
