Karnataka Sanskrit University Summary
Karnataka Sanskrit University, Bengaluru is a state public university established in 2010 to strengthen Sanskrit education, research and the study of India’s classical knowledge traditions. The Government of Karnataka created the university after sustained efforts to bring Sanskrit colleges and traditional learning centres in the state within a more coherent academic framework. Its stated vision combines preservation and promotion of Sanskrit language and literature with an explicitly interdisciplinary outlook that connects ancient knowledge with modern science, technology and the social sciences. The university therefore approaches Sanskrit not only as a language and literary tradition, but also as a source for philosophical, grammatical, scientific, cultural and intellectual inquiry. Its academic areas include Sanskrit language and literature, manuscriptology, Vyakarana, Nyaya and Vaisheshika, Alankara and other traditional shastra disciplines. University-level offerings have included doctoral and higher research programmes, while affiliated colleges provide undergraduate and postgraduate Sanskrit study. The College Development Council supports institutions under the university’s jurisdiction and works to improve academic standards and coordination. The university also undertakes activities connected with manuscripts, publications, seminars, research, awards and the wider dissemination of Sanskrit learning. Its role is especially significant in Karnataka, where Sanskrit scholarship has long interacted with Kannada literary and philosophical traditions. By creating a dedicated university structure, the state provided a platform where traditional pedagogy can coexist with contemporary research methods, academic credit systems and interdisciplinary study. Karnataka Sanskrit University’s identity is therefore rooted in both continuity and renewal: it preserves established modes of Sanskrit scholarship while encouraging new research questions, broader academic access and connections between classical texts and contemporary fields of knowledge. The university’s work also supports the continuing academic relevance of Sanskrit source material by encouraging scholars to examine texts through linguistic, philosophical, historical and interdisciplinary perspectives while maintaining links with the traditional colleges that preserve specialized branches of learning.
