Navsari Agricultural University Summary
Navsari Agricultural University is a state agricultural university headquartered at Navsari and serving the seven southern Gujarat districts of Surat, Navsari, Bharuch, Valsad, Narmada, Tapi and Dang. It came into existence on 1 May 2004 under the Gujarat Agricultural University Act, 2004, when the state reorganised agricultural higher education into regionally focused universities. NAU integrates teaching, research and extension, with academic activity spanning agriculture, horticulture, forestry, agribusiness management, agricultural engineering and agricultural biotechnology. The university reports seven colleges offering five bachelor’s, twenty-seven master’s and twenty-one doctoral degree programmes, giving it a broad academic structure across production agriculture and allied disciplines. Research is strongly location specific. NAU operates twenty-five research centres at fifteen locations working on mandate crops important to South Gujarat, including paddy, sugarcane, cotton, sorghum, small millets, mango, banana, sapota and vegetables. The university also participates in numerous All India Coordinated Research Projects, linking regional experiments with national agricultural research networks. Five Krishi Vigyan Kendras at Navsari, Surat, Waghai, Vyara and Dediapada, together with the Agricultural Technology Information Centre and other outreach units, support farmer training, demonstrations and transfer of technology across the university’s jurisdiction. The College of Forestry’s Bamboo Resource Centre adds a specialised conservation, propagation and value-addition dimension through its bambusetum, nursery, preservation facilities and agroforestry demonstrations. Student infrastructure includes hostels, sports facilities, a gymnasium, auditorium, health services and campus utilities, while the university library participates in national agricultural information systems. NAU’s identity is therefore broader than a conventional teaching university: it is a regional agricultural knowledge system that links degree education, crop and natural-resource research, farmer advisory services and technology dissemination. Its work is closely tied to the farming systems, horticultural economy and ecological conditions of South Gujarat. This regional integration enables research priorities to respond directly to farm production systems and agro-climatic conditions in South Gujarat.
