NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY OF MEGHALAYA Summary
National Law University Meghalaya is a state law university in Shillong established through the National Law University of Meghalaya Act, 2022. The Act received the Governor’s assent on 23 September 2022 and was published in the Meghalaya Gazette on 27 September 2022, giving the university its statutory foundation. NLU Meghalaya has been designed as a multidisciplinary, research-intensive legal institution with a particular opportunity to engage with the distinctive constitutional, customary, social, environmental and governance questions of Northeast India. The university currently operates from the Mayurbhanj Complex at Nongthymmai, Shillong, a heritage educational site that has previously housed other major higher-education institutions. Its undergraduate portfolio includes B.A. (Policy Science) LL.B. (Hons.), B.B.A. (FinTech) LL.B. (Hons.) and B.Sc. (Hons.), reflecting an unusually broad integration of law with policy, business technology and data science. The academic framework also provides postgraduate and research pathways, including LL.M., master’s-level interdisciplinary study and Ph.D. NLU Meghalaya organises teaching and research through twenty-two Schools covering fields such as constitutional governance, human rights, customary and indigenous law, technology and law, corporate law, intellectual property, international and outer-space law, criminal justice, sustainability and dispute resolution. Its residential model is supported by a research-oriented library and digital legal resources. The university’s academic regulations provide scope for majors, minors and interdisciplinary combinations, while admissions distinguish between Meghalaya domicile and non-domicile applicants under notified university and national entrance routes. The statutory framework has continued to evolve through amendments in 2023 and 2025. As a young university, NLU Meghalaya is still building institutional traditions, but its combination of regional relevance, multidisciplinary degree design, technology-enabled learning and specialised schools gives it a clearly differentiated place within India’s national law university network. The young institution’s modular curriculum is intended to let students combine core law study with specialised domain knowledge.
