Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong Summary
Martin Luther Christian University is a private university in Shillong, Meghalaya, created by Act No. 11 of 2005 of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The act received the Governor's assent on 6 July 2005, and the state issued the gazette notification on 22 February 2006. The university describes itself as India's first full-fledged Christian university and was established through collaboration between church organizations in the region. MLCU was conceived not only as a teaching institution but also as a developmental university for Meghalaya and the Northeast. Its academic and community work spans health sciences, social sciences, management, education, allied health, community development and other multidisciplinary areas. The university emphasizes engagement with government bodies, NGOs, community organizations, self-help groups and industry, linking classroom learning and research with regional issues such as healthcare, livelihoods, environment and culture. The founding process grew from discussions among Christian educational leaders concerned about limited higher-education opportunities in Northeast India. Collaboration between the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly and Lutheran partners helped shape the project, which was named after Martin Luther. Since the mid-2000s, MLCU has developed a distinct identity around community-based education, professional preparation and sustainable regional development.
