Assam Skill University is a state university created to integrate skills education, vocational training and higher education within a specialized university model. The Assam Legislative Assembly passed the Assam Skill University Act in September 2020, establishing a statutory foundation for an institution focused on employability, applied learning, industry relevance and entrepreneurship. The university is being developed with its main campus at Mangaldai in Darrang district, while an interim city campus in Guwahati enabled academic activity to begin before the permanent campus became fully operational. Sessions commenced from the Birubari city campus in the 2024–25 academic year, and the main Mangaldai campus was planned to become operational from 2025–26. This phased approach allowed programmes to launch while permanent infrastructure developed. Assam Skill University differs from a conventional discipline-based university because programmes are designed around occupational skills, applied technology and industry requirements. Its academic concept integrates practical training with higher-education qualifications, and its institutional plan includes specialized schools and Centres of Excellence intended to support advanced training. The university’s mission also emphasizes entrepreneurship, applied research and collaboration with industry, reflecting a broader goal of improving workforce productivity in Assam and the North-Eastern region. The Mangaldai location provides space for a purpose-built campus, while the Guwahati facilities support access during the transition. Programme design is linked with skill levels and competency-based education, making laboratory, workshop and workplace learning especially important. The university also aims to support Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions and other education providers through training and knowledge partnerships. Its creation reflects Assam’s effort to build a higher-education institution specifically around the connection between education and employment. Assam Skill University’s defining feature is therefore its skills-first academic model: rather than adding vocational courses to a general university, the institution itself is structured around applied learning, industry engagement, entrepreneurship and workforce development.
