National University of Study & Research in Law, Ranchi Summary
National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi is a state law university established by Act No. 4 of the Jharkhand State Assembly in 2010. The institution began functioning in September 2010 and was created to develop advanced legal education and research in Jharkhand through the national law university model. NUSRL has since built an academic structure centred on integrated undergraduate legal study, postgraduate education and research, with professional training supported by mooting, internships, legal-aid activity, seminars, publications and interdisciplinary engagement. The university received recognition from the University Grants Commission under Section 22 in September 2011 and later under Section 12(B) in 2018. Its programmes are also recognised by the Bar Council of India. NUSRL joined the Common Law Admission Test system from CLAT 2012, linking its national admissions to the shared process used by participating national law universities. The university’s undergraduate community has grown substantially since the first years of operation, while its academic work increasingly incorporates research on constitutional law, business regulation, criminal justice, intellectual property, technology, human rights and other contemporary fields. Located in Ranchi, NUSRL serves both a national student body and the legal-education needs of Jharkhand, a state with important questions relating to tribal communities, land, natural resources, development and constitutional governance. These regional contexts create opportunities for socially relevant legal research and field-based learning. The university’s teaching environment is supported by residential facilities, a law library, digital resources and student academic societies. Over time, NUSRL has moved from a newly enacted institution to an established member of the national law university system. Its development has been marked by statutory recognition, CLAT participation, expansion of academic programmes and research activity, and a continuing emphasis on combining professional legal education with scholarship and engagement with public institutions and communities.
