Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU) in Ranchi is a state unitary university whose institutional lineage reaches back to nineteenth-century education in Chhota Nagpur. The university evolved from Ranchi College, a major government higher-education institution that itself grew from earlier school and intermediate-level structures. The institution traces its origin to a Government English School started in 1839, became Ranchi Zila School in 1875, introduced intermediate arts teaching in 1926 and developed into Ranchi Government Degree College in 1946. It was renamed Ranchi College in 1949 and later became a constituent institution of Bihar University and then Ranchi University. In the twenty-first century the college received academic autonomy and was upgraded into a unitary state university. The institution’s educational lineage dates to 1839. Intermediate Arts teaching began in 1926 under Patna University. Ranchi Government Degree College began functioning on 1 August 1946. The name Ranchi College was adopted in 1949. Postgraduate teaching began in History and Hindi during 1951–52. The college became a constituent unit of Bihar University in 1952. It came under Ranchi University after that university was created in 1960. The institution shifted to its Morabadi site in 1962. UGC granted autonomous-college status in 2009 and also recognized College with Potential for Excellence status. The institution was upgraded to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University as a unitary state university. 1875 — The school evolved into Ranchi Zila School. 1926 — Intermediate Arts teaching began under Patna University. 1 August 1946 — Ranchi Government Degree College began functioning as a separate degree college. 1949 — The institution was renamed Ranchi College. 1951–52 — Postgraduate teaching began in History and Hindi. 1952 — Ranchi College became a constituent college of Bihar University. 1962 — The college shifted to its present Morabadi campus.
