GUJARAT UNIVERSITY OF TRANSPLANTATION SCIENCES Summary
Gujarat University of Transplantation Sciences (GUTS) is a state university in Ahmedabad devoted to transplantation medicine and closely related clinical, nursing and allied-health disciplines. Established in 2015 under a state university law, it describes itself as the first university in the world created specifically for transplantation and allied sciences. The concept originated in 1998 with Prof. H. L. Trivedi, the founding director of the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre–Institute of Transplantation Sciences (IKDRC-ITS). The university developed within the clinical and academic environment of the Civil Hospital campus at Asarwa, giving its teaching a direct connection with patient care and transplant services. Its programme portfolio includes super-specialty medical education such as M.Ch. Urology and D.M. Nephrology, along with M.D. Anaesthesiology. It also offers specialized fellowships connected with abdominal organ transplantation, liver transplant anaesthesia and critical care, and interventional radiology. Allied-health and nursing education includes Master of Physiotherapy, medical and surgical nursing, transplant-nursing pathways, postgraduate medical laboratory technology and dialysis-technology training. This unusually focused academic model allows clinical training, transplantation science, organ-failure management, rehabilitation, diagnostics and nursing practice to be developed within one institutional framework. The university's creation followed a legislative sequence in 2015, from passage of the bill to gubernatorial assent, Gazette publication and a state notification bringing the institution into operation. Its relationship with IKDRC-ITS is central to its identity because the university grew from an established ecosystem of kidney disease treatment, transplantation and specialist clinical research. GUTS therefore differs from a broad multidisciplinary university: its teaching and research are deliberately concentrated around complex medical care and the professional teams required to support it. The Ahmedabad location also places students and researchers inside one of Gujarat's public-health and tertiary-care environments. Its structure reflects the multidisciplinary realities of transplantation medicine and long-term organ care.
