Ahmedabad University Summary
Ahmedabad University is a private, non-profit research university in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, established in July 2009 by the Ahmedabad Education Society. The sponsoring society itself dates to 1935 and has played a significant role in the city’s educational development. Ahmedabad University was created under Section 3(1) of the Gujarat Private Universities Act, 2009, with the aim of building a modern institution combining liberal education, interdisciplinary learning and research. The university offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral education across engineering, management, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and related interdisciplinary fields. Its academic model places particular emphasis on broad-based undergraduate learning, research thinking, project work, field engagement and the ability to study across disciplinary boundaries. Students are encouraged to combine majors, minors and electives rather than follow narrowly separated academic streams. Ahmedabad University’s evolution has been marked by the development of schools and centres that support both teaching and research. The Amrut Mody School of Management, School of Engineering and Applied Science and School of Arts and Sciences form important parts of the academic structure, while specialized centres support areas such as heritage, entrepreneurship, learning and research. The university’s centrally located urban campus places students within Ahmedabad’s commercial, industrial and cultural environment. Quality assurance, research growth and institutional development have been priorities as the university has matured. Ahmedabad University has received recognition through the Gujarat State Institutional Rating Framework and participates in national higher-education reporting and ranking systems. By the time it marked fifteen years of operation, the university had grown from a small set of programs into an institution with multiple schools and centres. Its identity remains distinct from many professionally focused private universities because it combines a liberal undergraduate philosophy with a research-university aspiration. The result is an institution built around interdisciplinarity, independent inquiry, experiential learning and the longer educational legacy of the Ahmedabad Education Society.
