KAUSHALYA THE SKILL UNIVERSITY Summary
Kaushalya: The Skill University (KSU), Gujarat is a state public university established in October 2021 to integrate higher education with structured skill development, vocational training and entrepreneurship. Created through Gujarat legislation under the Department of Labour, Skill Development and Employment, the university uses the guiding idea of “Education with Skill” and is designed to make academic learning directly relevant to workplace competencies and emerging sectors. Its model differs from a conventional general university because industry participation, practical training, competency frameworks and employability are built into programme design. The university operates from campuses in Ahmedabad while developing its wider institutional infrastructure and an affiliating network of skill institutes, centres of excellence and academic partners. Undergraduate programmes have included areas such as cloud computing, steel technology, transportation and mobility, green and renewable energy, CNC technology, banking and insurance, tourism and event management, jewellery design and manufacturing, and logistics. Diploma, certificate, postgraduate and doctoral opportunities extend the model across different qualification levels. KSU’s objectives include reskilling and upskilling, alignment with National Skills Qualification Framework principles, transfer of academic credit from skill learning, industry-led training, trainer development, entrepreneurship and research in sectors important to Gujarat’s economy. The university also builds collaborations with sector skill councils, industry bodies, universities and technology organizations to connect classrooms with professional practice. Its first academic session began in 2022, and subsequent growth has included affiliated partners, collaborative institutions and large-scale short-term training. Kaushalya: The Skill University therefore represents a policy-driven attempt to place vocational capability, technology, enterprise and formal university credentials within one integrated public higher-education system. This design allows learners to move between formal degrees and shorter competency-based training while industry-linked laboratories, specialist centres and partner institutions can be used to update teaching more quickly when technologies, occupations and employer requirements change. It also supports flexible lifelong learning.
