ATAL MEDICAL AND RESEARCH UNIVERSITY Summary
Atal Medical and Research University is Himachal Pradesh’s state health sciences university, based at Ner Chowk in Mandi district. It was created under the Himachal Pradesh University of Health Sciences Act, 2017 and was subsequently renamed through a 2019 amendment as Atal Medical and Research University. The university’s headquarters were notified at the campus of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College, Mandi at Ner Chowk. Its purpose is to provide a common academic, regulatory and examination framework for health-professional education across Himachal Pradesh. The affiliation mandate covers institutions teaching modern medicine, dentistry, nursing, Indian systems of medicine, homeopathy, pharmacy, paramedical sciences, physiotherapy, speech therapy and other approved health-related disciplines. This makes AMRU primarily a specialized affiliating and examining university rather than a conventional multidisciplinary campus university. It coordinates registration, academic regulations, examinations, results and degree processes while affiliated colleges and hospitals provide most programme-specific teaching and clinical training. The university’s governance structure includes statutory bodies such as the Board of Management, Finance Committee and academic authorities responsible for oversight of health-sciences education. Its creation consolidated functions that had previously been distributed among other universities and provided a dedicated state-level institution for medical and allied professional programmes. Located within an important government medical-education complex, AMRU is positioned close to clinical and teaching infrastructure relevant to its specialist mandate. It also supports research, academic development and quality improvement across the health sciences. For students, the university’s significance lies in its statewide role: a medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy or allied-health student may study at an affiliated institution in another district, but the academic regulations, university examinations and award of qualifications are coordinated through AMRU. That system gives Himachal Pradesh a dedicated health sciences university with a unified institutional focus on professional standards, examinations and research. Clinical education remains central.
