KING GEORGE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY Summary
King George's Medical University in Lucknow is one of India's long-established public medical institutions, combining medical education, specialist training, biomedical research and large-scale patient care. Its institutional story began in the early twentieth century, when the visit of the Prince of Wales helped revive plans for a medical college in Lucknow. The foundation stone was laid in 1906, and the medical college subsequently became a central part of the University of Lucknow's medical teaching system. Over the decades, the institution expanded beyond undergraduate medicine into postgraduate, super-specialty, dental, nursing and allied health education while developing major clinical services for Uttar Pradesh and neighboring regions. The Dental Faculty grew from a section created in 1949, became an independent department in 1950 and later evolved into a full faculty. A major structural change came in 2002, when the Uttar Pradesh government upgraded the institution to university status as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University. In 2003, the historic King George's name was restored, creating the present King George's Medical University identity. KGMU today functions as a state medical university with teaching hospitals, specialty departments, laboratories, research programs and tertiary-care services that serve a very large and diverse patient population. Its academic model is closely linked to clinical exposure, allowing students and residents to learn within a high-volume hospital environment. The university also supports doctoral and research activity across medical and biomedical disciplines, alongside continuing medical education and professional training. Its significance rests not only on age or scale but on the continuity between a historic medical college and a modern university structure. That continuity has allowed KGMU to preserve a distinctive institutional legacy while expanding into contemporary areas of health sciences, advanced diagnostics, complex clinical care, public health and interdisciplinary medical research. Its Lucknow teaching hospitals also function as referral centers for complex cases from across Uttar Pradesh.
