Trier University Summary
Trier University is a public university located in Trier, Rhineland-Palatinate. The city of Trier boasts one of the oldest university traditions in Germany and a modern campus university focusing on the humanities, social sciences, economics, law, psychology, environmental sciences and computer sciences. 1473 – The original University of Trier was founded as part of its institutional development. 16th century — theology, law, medicine and arts constituted the historic institution. Today its academic profile is built around the humanities, languages, history, social sciences, economics, law, psychology, computer science, data and environmental sciences. The location is important because Trier is a historic city close to Luxembourg, France and Belgium, providing students with access to cross-border institutions, European employers, culture, tourism and international mobility.
This master file is a course portfolio with 26 entries for undergraduate courses and 26 entries for postgraduate courses. Where appropriate subject combinations have been aggregated under the parent degree. There is Applied Computer Science, Business Administration, Computer Science, Economics, Education, English Studies, for example, but then Sociology, Spanish Studies and Theology come later. Postgraduate study includes Anglophone Literatures and Media, Applied Statistics, Business Administration, China Studies, Computer Science, Data Science, Sociology, Survey Statistics and Teacher Education. Specialisations are retained on the course entry rather than being falsely represented as separate degrees . Each course is still a parent qualification . With more than one hundred programs to offer, including two-subject combinations and a growing number of master’s courses in English, combinations are consolidated here.
Admission control at the program level. Applicants use the PORTA portal. Trier evaluates international qualifications itself (not via uni-assist) and charges a fee of €70 for the evaluation of foreign certificates. Applicants are required to confirm the language of instruction, entry semester, subject requirements, selection process and document route prior to application. International school or university qualifications may have to be externally assessed, translated and certified and for some countries, accompanied by APS documentation and/or further evidence of academic equivalence. Master’s committees may require module descriptions, portfolios, writing samples, professional experience or interviews. Admission to the doctoral program is separate from admission to the bachelor’s or master’s program and generally requires a viable research proposal, eligible supervision and formal acceptance by the responsible faculty.
There are no tuition fees at Trier University for regular programs. The fee for the winter semester 2026/27 is €371.80 and includes student services, student representation and the Germany semester ticket. New students also follow the published enrolment payment procedure. These institutional charges do not include the cost of rent, health insurance, food, learning materials, residence formalities, project costs or personal travel. If provided for by the relevant law or program regulation, special tuition may be provided for continuing-education, distance-learning, joint, second-degree, or long-term study formats. Funding (e.g. BAföG for eligible students, Deutschlandstipendium, DAAD and Erasmus+ mobility support, foundations, research employment or university-specific awards) is available, but each funding application is evaluated separately from admission.
