MAHARANA PRATAP HORTICULTURAL UNIVERSITY Summary
Maharana Pratap Horticultural University is a specialised state public university in Karnal, Haryana, devoted to horticultural education, research and extension. The institution came into existence on 28 November 2016 under the Haryana State University of Horticultural Sciences Act, 2016 and was initially established as the Haryana State University of Horticultural Sciences. It was subsequently named Maharana Pratap Horticultural University, giving the specialised institution a distinct identity within Haryana’s agricultural higher-education system. The university was created to advance horticulture as a productive, diversified and sustainable farming system and to address the scientific and technological needs of growers, entrepreneurs and rural communities. Its mandate covers teaching, research and extension across horticultural and allied disciplines, including fruit science, vegetable science, floriculture, landscape architecture, plant protection, post-harvest management and related areas. Rather than functioning as a conventional general university, MHU is structured around the full chain of horticultural development—from crop improvement and production practices to protected cultivation, value addition, quality management and technology transfer. The university’s research and extension orientation is particularly relevant to Haryana, where diversification beyond traditional cereal systems is an important agricultural objective. It aims to improve productivity, profitability, nutritional security, ecological sustainability and livelihood opportunities through regionally appropriate horticultural technologies. Academic programs are supported by field experimentation, laboratories, farms and engagement with growers. The university also contributes to training, demonstrations and extension activities that translate research findings into practical farm-level applications. As a relatively young specialist university, its infrastructure, academic departments and research systems continue to expand. Maharana Pratap Horticultural University’s distinctive strength lies in its narrow but strategically important focus: building human resources and generating technologies for horticulture while linking university teaching directly with applied research, extension education and the economic needs of farming communities. Its specialist model keeps horticultural science at the centre of every core university function.
