UTTARAKHAND UNIVERSITY OF HORTICULTURE AND FORESTRY, BHARSAR Summary
Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali Uttarakhand University of Horticulture and Forestry is a specialized state university headquartered at Bharsar in Pauri Garhwal. It was established in 2011 to strengthen horticulture, forestry and hill agriculture through an integrated system of teaching, research and extension. The university was formed by bringing together the College of Horticulture at Bharsar, the College of Forestry at Ranichauri and research centres at Kanatal and Gaja that had earlier been associated with G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. The institution later received the Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali name through a state amendment. Its academic mission is closely tied to Uttarakhand's mountain economy and ecology. Horticulture, forestry and hill agriculture are especially important in a state where small farms, sloping land, forests, fruit crops, vegetables, medicinal plants and climate-sensitive production systems shape rural livelihoods. The university therefore combines degree programmes with field research on crop improvement, protected cultivation, soil and water management, forest resources, agroforestry, post-harvest technology and sustainable mountain farming. Bharsar and Ranichauri provide contrasting locations for teaching and applied research in hill conditions. The university's development plan also includes specialized institutions and research-extension centres in different parts of Uttarakhand, enabling work to respond to local agro-climatic conditions rather than relying on a single campus. Its mandate emphasizes technology transfer to farmers and other stakeholders, making extension an equal partner with teaching and research. Students gain exposure to orchards, nurseries, forests, laboratories and field experiments that reflect the practical nature of horticulture and forestry education. By integrating previously separate colleges and research centres into one specialist university, the institution created a coordinated platform for scientific development of Uttarakhand's horticultural, forestry and hill-agriculture sectors. The mountain-focused structure is particularly valuable for developing technologies that remain practical under steep terrain, small holdings and climate-sensitive production conditions.
