Uttar Banga Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Cooch Behar Summary
Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) is a state agricultural university headquartered at Pundibari in Cooch Behar, West Bengal. It began functioning on 1 February 2001 after being created through bifurcation of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. The university was established to serve the agricultural needs of northern West Bengal, a region that contains sharply different agro-climatic zones ranging from Himalayan hills and foothills to the Terai and old alluvial plains. Its jurisdiction gives it a strong regional-development mission in addition to its academic responsibilities. UBKV organizes education through faculties of Agriculture, Horticulture and Technology. Undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in agriculture and horticulture are supported by departments in agronomy, plant pathology, entomology, agricultural economics, extension, soil science, genetics and plant breeding, seed science, fruit science, vegetable science, floriculture, forestry, plantation crops and post-harvest technology. Technology programmes add an engineering dimension to the university's agricultural profile. This disciplinary mix reflects the diversity of northern West Bengal, where rice, maize, tea, tobacco, vegetables, spices, medicinal plants, fruits and orchids are economically important. Research is organized through regional stations representing major agro-climatic zones. Important centres include Pundibari for the Terai, Kalimpong for the Hill Zone and Majhian for the Old Alluvial Zone, supported by sub-stations and coordinated projects. The university also operates a network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras and extension programmes that transfer research outcomes to farmers and rural communities. Work on crop varieties, disease and pest management, soil and water, horticulture and biotechnology is closely tied to local production constraints. By combining teaching, region-specific research and field extension, UBKV functions as the principal agricultural knowledge system for the northern districts of West Bengal. Its research geography therefore mirrors the environmental diversity of the region and helps make recommendations more locally relevant. Its field network makes university recommendations more closely aligned with local farming conditions.
