COOCH BEHAR PANCHANAN BARMA UNIVERSITY Summary
Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University is a state university in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, established to expand postgraduate education, research and affiliating support for the district and adjoining areas. The university was created under the Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University Act, 2012 and is named after Thakur Panchanan Barma, the Rajbanshi social reformer, lawyer and community leader associated with the region. Before the university’s establishment, much of the area’s higher-education system was served through the University of North Bengal. The new university created a local postgraduate and research centre while assuming responsibility for affiliated colleges within its jurisdiction. Its first academic session began in 2013 with postgraduate teaching proposed in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Geography and Hindi. The institution also announced a certificate course in Spanish as part of its early academic development. Since those beginnings, the university has expanded into additional humanities, social-science and science disciplines and has developed research-degree activity. Its examination and curriculum structures were designed around credit-based systems, reflecting an early intention to support academic mobility and modern university processes. The university’s headquarters at Panchanan Nagar places it within the educational landscape of Cooch Behar town and close to the cultural setting associated with the Rajbanshi community. Alongside campus teaching, the institution performs examination, affiliation and academic-governance functions for colleges in the surrounding region. Its current academic identity is therefore shaped by two linked roles: direct postgraduate and research teaching, and regional coordination of undergraduate higher education through affiliated institutions. The university’s name also gives it a distinctive cultural mandate, connecting modern public higher education with the social-reform legacy of Panchanan Barma and the historical development of Cooch Behar. The university’s first academic session began in 2013 with postgraduate teaching in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Geography and Hindi, alongside a certificate course in Spanish.
