SRI KONDA LAXMAN TELANGANA STATE HORTICULTURAL UNIVERSITY (SKLTSHU) Summary
Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University is a specialized public state university devoted to horticultural education, research and extension in Telangana. It was established in December 2014 after the reorganization of Andhra Pradesh, when horticultural colleges, research stations and other units located within Telangana were separated from the erstwhile Dr. Y.S.R. Horticultural University. The institution is named after Sri Konda Laxman Bapuji, the freedom fighter and prominent Telangana leader. It is the only dedicated horticultural university in the state and one of the small number of specialized horticultural universities in India. The university’s academic structure includes constituent colleges, a postgraduate institute for horticultural sciences, polytechnics and affiliated units that support undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and diploma education. Research is organized through a network of stations working across Telangana’s different agro-climatic conditions. Major themes include fruit crops, vegetables, spices, floriculture, medicinal and aromatic plants, crop improvement, plant protection, production technology, post-harvest management and value addition. A Krishi Vigyan Kendra and extension activities help transfer university technologies and recommendations to growers and rural communities. The university is accredited within the agricultural-education system and places strong emphasis on location-specific horticultural research because crop performance, water availability, temperature and pest pressures vary considerably across the state. Its teaching programmes combine biological science with practical production, nursery management, protected cultivation, processing and entrepreneurship. Industry and research linkages further support student exposure and collaborative work. Through this integrated teaching-research-extension model, the university contributes to human-resource development and technology generation for a sector that is central to farm diversification, nutrition, value-added agriculture and income growth in Telangana. The university’s structure links crop-specific research with academic training and field extension, allowing findings to move from experiments to growers. This is valuable in horticulture, where quality, perishability, market timing and post-harvest handling can be as important to farm income as total production.
