Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga Summary
Lalit Narayan Mithila University is a state public university headquartered at Kameshwaranagar in Darbhanga, Bihar, and is one of the principal higher-education institutions serving the Mithila region. The movement for a separate university in Darbhanga developed over decades, with local demand evident soon after Independence. A major step came in 1968 when a University Grants Commission team visited Darbhanga to examine the case for a multi-faculty university. Further state and central committees considered the academic and administrative need for an independent institution. Mithila University was finally established by ordinance in 1972, drawing colleges from the Darbhanga and Kosi divisions that had previously been associated with Bihar University and Bhagalpur University. The university initially functioned from Mohanpur House on the Darbhanga-Sakri road. In 1975 it shifted to the former Raj Darbhanga palace complex, which became the Kameshwaranagar campus and gave the university one of the most distinctive historic settings of any public university in Bihar. The institution's name changed after the death of Lalit Narayan Mishra in 1975, was briefly reversed, and was permanently restored as Lalit Narayan Mithila University in 1980. The university received UGC recognition under Section 2(f) in 1976 and Section 12(B) in 1986. In 1992, colleges of the Kosi division were transferred to the newly established B.N. Mandal University, reshaping LNMU's territorial structure. Today the university supports postgraduate departments, constituent and affiliated colleges, doctoral research and professional education across humanities, social sciences, science, commerce and other disciplines. Its location and institutional history make it closely connected with the language, culture and educational development of the wider Mithila region. The Kameshwaranagar campus includes historic palace buildings adapted for university administration, teaching and cultural collections. Its large constituent-college network gives the university an extensive role in undergraduate education across northern Bihar. The university remains central to Darbhanga's academic life.
