HINDI UNIVERSITY Summary
Hindi University is a state public university in Howrah, West Bengal, created to expand access to higher education through Hindi while supporting multidisciplinary study and research. Its statutory foundation lies in the Hindi University Act, 2019, enacted by the Government of West Bengal. The university observes 10 January 2020 as its Foundation Day, corresponding to the formal notification of the Act, while provisions of the legislation were subsequently brought into operation through government notification. The institution was conceived in a state with a substantial Hindi-speaking population and with a specific mandate to develop advanced teaching, translation, scholarship and knowledge production through Hindi. Its early academic development included postgraduate programmes in Hindi and Translation Studies along with disciplines such as History and Political Science. This combination reflects an identity that is language-centred but not limited to literary study: the university also seeks to use Hindi as a medium for engagement with the humanities and social sciences. Translation Studies is especially relevant to its mission because it connects Hindi with India’s multilingual academic and cultural environment, supports movement of knowledge across languages and creates opportunities for research in terminology, interpretation and comparative literature. As a young university, Hindi University is still in an institution-building phase, with academic programmes, faculty structures, research activity and administrative systems developing progressively. The appointment of regular university leadership has been part of that consolidation, including Prof. Nandini Sahu taking charge as Vice-Chancellor in December 2024. The university’s broader purpose is to strengthen Hindi-medium higher education without isolating it from contemporary scholarship. By combining language, translation, history, politics and related fields, it provides a platform for students and researchers interested in Hindi as a language of academic inquiry, communication, cultural analysis and public knowledge in eastern India. It holds a place in West Bengal education and supports scholarship linking language, translation and society.
