Davangere University, Davangere Summary
Davangere University is a public state university headquartered at Shivagangotri in Davangere, Karnataka, with academic jurisdiction covering Davangere and Chitradurga districts. Its university status dates from 18 August 2009, but its postgraduate teaching lineage is older. The academic centre at Davangere functioned as a Post-Graduate Centre of the University of Mysore from 1979 to 1987. After Kuvempu University was established in 1987, the same centre operated under Kuvempu University until the creation of Davangere University. This continuity gave the new university an existing base of postgraduate departments, faculty and regional academic demand. The university now combines campus-based postgraduate teaching and research with an affiliating role for a large network of colleges. Its official profile lists 124 affiliated colleges, including one constituent college and one autonomous college, serving tens of thousands of students across the two-district jurisdiction. Academic departments cover humanities, social sciences, commerce, management, sciences and interdisciplinary subjects. The Department of Studies in History, established in 2010, illustrates the university’s post-establishment expansion and offers M.A., Ph.D. and D.Litt.-level academic work. The institution also uses project work, field visits, seminars and special lectures in departments where practical or research-based learning is important. The Shivagangotri campus serves as the university’s main teaching and administrative centre, while affiliated colleges provide much of the undergraduate reach. Because Davangere and Chitradurga include both urban and rural communities, the university’s regional role includes expanding access to postgraduate study without requiring students to relocate to Bengaluru or older university centres. Its institutional identity therefore rests on the transformation of a long-running postgraduate centre into an independent state university with both teaching and affiliating responsibilities. Its evolution from a postgraduate centre into an independent university preserved a regional academic base while giving Davangere and Chitradurga districts a dedicated institution for postgraduate teaching, research and college affiliation.
