Thiruvalluvar Univeristy, Vellore Summary
Thiruvalluvar University is a state public affiliating university in Tamil Nadu, established in October 2002 under the Thiruvalluvar University Act, 2002 (Tamil Nadu Act 32 of 2002). Named after the celebrated Tamil poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar, the university emerged from the postgraduate extension centre of the University of Madras that had been operating in Vellore. It was inaugurated on 16 October 2002 and initially functioned from the Fort Campus with three departments: Economics, Zoology, and Chemistry. This institutional beginning gave the new university an immediate postgraduate and research base. The university later shifted to a purpose-built campus at Serkadu near Vallimalai, about 16 kilometres from Vellore. Official information describes the campus as approximately 112.68 acres on the Ranipet-Chittoor road. The move to Serkadu in 2010 was accompanied by academic expansion, including departments such as Tamil, English, Mathematics, and Biotechnology. Administrative, academic, computer-science, and library facilities were developed as the university moved beyond its original Fort Campus setting. Thiruvalluvar University serves an important regional role as an affiliating and research university in northern Tamil Nadu. Its stated mission emphasizes advancement of knowledge and research alongside widening educational opportunity for communities in districts that historically contained substantial rural and socially disadvantaged populations. The university is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and received UGC 12(B) status in 2014. It underwent its first NAAC accreditation cycle in 2018 and received a B grade. The institution’s identity therefore combines Tamil cultural symbolism, regional access, affiliating responsibilities, and campus-based postgraduate teaching. From a three-department beginning in Vellore Fort, it has developed into a broader university with a dedicated Serkadu campus and an expanding academic and research profile. Its affiliating responsibilities also connect the university with a wide college network, allowing campus-based research and postgraduate expertise to influence undergraduate education across its designated region of Tamil Nadu.
