Haveri University is a state public affiliating university headquartered at Kerimattihalli in Haveri, Karnataka, created through the state's 2022 reorganisation of public university jurisdictions. Its academic roots lie in the Karnatak University Post Graduate Centre at Haveri, which was established in 2001 to serve rural and urban students of Haveri district. The postgraduate centre developed on a 42-acre site at Kerimattihalli, about eight kilometres from Haveri, and offered subjects including Kannada, social work, commerce, English, sociology, and mass communication and journalism. The Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Act, 2022 established Haveri University as an affiliating university with headquarters at Haveri and territorial jurisdiction over Haveri district. The law also transferred the district's college-affiliation framework away from Karnatak University, Dharwad, providing a local university structure for academic administration. The university began operational development in 2023, building its own governance, examination, affiliation and academic systems on the foundation of the former postgraduate centre. Current university material shows continued teaching in established postgraduate disciplines and the development of updated curricula under contemporary credit-based frameworks. Mass communication and journalism remains one of the identifiable academic areas, combining theory, practical media work, communication research and emerging technologies. The university's public role is especially important for students from rural and semi-urban communities who can access postgraduate study without relocating to larger cities. As an affiliating university, Haveri also provides a closer administrative home for degree colleges within the district. Its evolution reflects a broader Karnataka policy of creating universities at additional district headquarters to decentralise higher-education governance. The institution is still in a formative infrastructure phase, with the Kerimattihalli campus carrying forward facilities inherited from the earlier postgraduate centre while new departments and services are developed. Its development gives Haveri district a dedicated university structure for both advanced teaching and college affiliation.
