Tamil Univesity, Thanjavur Summary
Tamil University in Thanjavur is a specialized public university created to advance high-level learning and research in Tamil language, literature, culture and related fields of civilization. The idea of a dedicated Tamil university is much older than the institution itself. Tamil scholars meeting at Thanjavur on 23 August 1925 proposed an exclusive university for the language and even opened an account in the Imperial Bank at Trichinopoly for the project, but the plan did not receive the official support required at that time. The concept was revived after independence and took concrete form under the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1981. The university was established at Thanjavur on 15 September 1981, a location chosen for its deep association with Tamil art, literature, history and the Chola cultural legacy. The Tamil University Act No. 9 of 1982 provided its statutory framework, and the University Grants Commission recognized the institution on 11 June 1985. Academic and research work extends beyond literature to linguistics, translation, epigraphy, archaeology, philosophy, manuscriptology, folk studies, art history, lexicography and other areas that help document and interpret Tamil civilization. The university also publishes scholarly works, preserves source materials and supports research that connects classical heritage with contemporary academic methods. Its motto encourages elevated thought, and its institutional mission positions Tamil not only as a literary language but also as a subject of multidisciplinary research. Tamil University therefore represents the realization of a cultural-educational project first articulated more than half a century before its formal establishment. The university’s specialized structure allows language scholarship to interact with archaeology, history, art, folklore and manuscript research under one institutional framework. The idea of establishing a university dedicated to Tamil was formally discussed by scholars as early as 1925. The university was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 15 September 1981.
