Tamil Nadu Opens Advanced Electrical Labs at 30 Government ITIs
Tamil Nadu has opened advanced electrical laboratories at 30 government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), expanding practical training facilities for students in vocational trades. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated the labs at a government ITI in Guindy, Chennai, on October 28, 2026. The project was set up with support from Schneider Electric India Private Limited and cost ₹5.10 crore.
The facilities are expected to benefit around 9,250 trainees every year across 23 districts. At the inauguration, the state government and Schneider Electric also signed a memorandum of understanding to establish modern electrical laboratories at 40 additional government ITIs. The next phase is estimated to cost ₹6.80 crore.

The labs are intended to strengthen hands-on instruction alongside classroom learning. The official announcement identifies the new facilities as advanced electrical labs; it does not provide a trade-by-trade equipment list or a separate rollout calendar for the 40 additional institutes. Students should therefore check with their own ITI for details on available equipment, practical sessions and when any new facilities will be ready.
Other announcements at the event
The event also recognised student achievements and departmental recruitment. Fifteen winners of the 59th State-Level Skill Competition received cheques of ₹25,000 each. Certificates were presented to 60 students who secured national first ranks in the All India Trade Test. The Chief Minister also handed appointment orders to 673 Junior Training Officers selected for the Employment and Training Department.
Students enrolled in electrician and wireman trades received training kits. The Chief Minister also visited student projects and training facilities at the Guindy ITI, including workshops for welding, robotics, hydraulics and pneumatics, advanced CNC machining and laser cutting. These activities reflect the wider focus of the event on practical skills and technical training.
What ITI students need to know
The announcement concerns training infrastructure at government ITIs; it is not a new admission notification. It does not change course eligibility, application dates, fees or seat availability. Candidates seeking ITI admission should follow the Directorate of Employment and Training’s official admission notices. Current trainees can contact their institute to confirm whether it is among the 30 locations receiving a lab and how the facilities will be incorporated into practical instruction.
